What's My 20

at penn state university

As part of our "Earth Week" activities this year, the campus will have use of a demo' Segway Personal Transportation (PT) vehicle on April 23-25. If you have not seen or heard of Segways, check them out at: http://www.segway.com/

The vehicle has a number of environmental advantages as well as unique operational capabilities (visit the link above for details). They are being used extensively on campuses in higher ed, corporations, transportation and health care. A number of police departments use them in urban and event settings. University Park has a growing fleet of Segways in OPP, operations and police services/parking. Dr. Speece and I had a chance to ride one at UP and I can testify that they do not require any extraordinary skill, in fact they are pretty easy to operate.

The University policy governing use of Segways is SY16 which can be seen at: http://guru.psu.edu/policies/Sy16.html
Basically, the university treats them like bicycles. They are to be driven on sidewalks and you must wear an approved bike helmet. We will have a helmet available to folks that wish to use the vehicle during the demo visit.

Bob Palik, the owner of Segway of The Lehigh Valley, will be dropping the demo off on Wednesday, April 23 at 8:00 am. If you are interested in speaking with Bob or if you would like to have some of your staff test ride the Segway, please contact Mark Dawson. Mark is coordinating the delivery and will be scheduling use of the vehicle during the three days we have it on campus.

If you have any questions I can help you with, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,
